Discover Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant

Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Norwood, Johannesburg. If you’re looking to explore the rich and flavorful world of Ethiopian cuisine, this restaurant offers an experience that takes you right to the heart of Ethiopia. The location at 106 Algernon Rd & Grant Ave, Norwood, Johannesburg, 2192, South Africa, provides a cozy yet vibrant setting, perfect for a casual dining experience or a special outing.

Upon stepping inside, the first thing that stands out is the welcoming atmosphere. The decor is warm and inviting, filled with traditional Ethiopian artwork and cultural touches that transport you to another place entirely. The ambiance strikes a balance between being intimate enough for a quiet dinner and lively enough to enjoy a meal with friends or family.

The menu at Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is an absolute treat for the senses. You’ll find a variety of traditional Ethiopian dishes, many of which are hard to come by outside of Ethiopia itself. The highlight, of course, is injera - a unique, spongy flatbread that serves as both a base and utensil for your meal. Pairing perfectly with a variety of stews and curries, injera is an integral part of the Ethiopian dining experience.

One of the standout dishes is the Doro Wat, a spicy chicken stew simmered in a rich sauce with hard-boiled eggs. This dish is full of depth and complexity, showcasing the bold and vibrant flavors that Ethiopian cuisine is known for. If you’re in the mood for something vegetarian, the Atayef, a hearty vegetable stew, is another must-try, rich with lentils and spices. The portions are generous, ensuring that you leave fully satisfied.

For those new to Ethiopian cuisine, the shared dining style can be a fun and engaging way to enjoy your meal. Plates are typically served family-style, and the communal nature of the meal encourages conversation and connection. The food is eaten with your hands, using pieces of injera to scoop up the stews and vegetables - a cultural tradition that enhances the dining experience.

The restaurant also caters to those with dietary restrictions, offering a range of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Whether you’re a fan of meat-heavy stews or prefer plant-based dishes, there’s something for everyone. The chefs are skilled in balancing flavors and textures, ensuring that each dish is as delicious as it is authentic.

Customer service at Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is top-notch. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to explain the menu and offer recommendations. They are attentive without being intrusive, creating a dining experience that feels personal and genuine. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, you’ll always feel welcomed.

A great aspect of the restaurant is its commitment to using fresh, local ingredients in their dishes. This dedication to quality is evident in every bite, from the perfectly spiced stews to the tangy fermented injera. Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant truly captures the essence of traditional Ethiopian cooking while maintaining a high standard of quality.

Another feature worth noting is the wide range of beverages available. From Ethiopian honey wine (Tej) to local and imported beers, the drinks menu complements the food perfectly. If you’re in the mood for something non-alcoholic, the freshly brewed coffee - Ethiopian-style, of course - is a standout. Ethiopian coffee is renowned worldwide for its robust and rich flavor, and Queen Sheba serves it in traditional cups, adding to the authentic experience.

For dessert, there are several traditional Ethiopian sweets to explore, though the savory dishes are undoubtedly the main attraction. The restaurant offers a great balance of flavors that ensure your meal ends on a satisfying note.

The location is another bonus. Nestled in Norwood, Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is easily accessible for both locals and visitors. Whether you're heading to the area for shopping or just a day out, the restaurant provides a great place to pause, relax, and enjoy something truly special.

Customer reviews consistently praise the quality of the food and the hospitality. Diners have shared their delight at discovering a genuine taste of Ethiopia in Johannesburg, and the overall sentiment is one of satisfaction and eagerness to return. It's a place that feels like home, offering a unique culinary experience that is both authentic and unforgettable.

If you find yourself in Johannesburg and craving something new, Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant should definitely be on your list. • Amazing hidden gem in Norwood, from the outside you would not expect to walk into such a spacious place. Service is good, very clean place. Beautiful bar. Extremely affordable. The food taste but a little bit of spicy would be great. I am def coming back again.

  • Very much enjoyed the food! The area isn't the greatest for 2 ladiez alone and night and the restaurant itself did feel terribly clean. As a vegan, sitting on animal skin wasn't very comfortable and in shorts it gave me a rash Service was amazing and so was the meal!

  • This was such a unique experience. As a grouo of friends this was a lovely evening out enjoyed by both the adults and kids. We ordered a platter for the table which was brought on one plate with lamb, chicken and various vegetables. The kids had such a fun time eating with their hands and it was a wonderful communal experience. Unfortunately the restaurant was out of both Ethiopian beer and wine, but they served freshly roasted Ethiopian coffee that was served expresso style which went down really well with the sweet popcorn. Take note that cars are parked in the road which could be a bit of a security risk. Unfortunately there were no car guards to assist. The staff were really friendly and showed us how they went about roasting the coffee as well as explaining the various dishes.

  • Had the privilege of being invited to celebrate the Ethopian new year at Queen Sheba's. What a wonderful experience. The dinner was buffet style, with lots of meat. When mentioning we had 3 vegans as part of our group, the owner (without any issue) prepared individual platters for us, which was absolutely delicious- so many flavours and textures. And the coffee! Would highly recommend to vegans or anyone wanting to experience Ethiopian cuisine.

  • I have been here multiple times. Lovely ambiance and the owner is so wonderful and hospitable. Great prices and an all-round experience eating with your hands and trying new things. I just don't think Ethiopian is really my style but the food is good nonetheless. Great presentation too.
